3. Relationship-centred care

 The relationship is the bond that removes isolation and fear. Improves awareness, understanding and sense of control. When two people develop trust, meaningful results result by improving social connection and fostering communication, empathy, and compassion. Through relationships, unhealthy emotions are released and optimism and positive expectations are born. Patient-centred, relationship-centred care has been found to improve the efficiency of care by reducing the need for medical tests and referrals.

2. Integrity

Health is the result of a dynamic balance of biopsychosocial and spiritual influences. To facilitate healing, it is necessary to develop insight into how these factors are expressed in each unique individual (patient). The holistic model requires exploration of the mind, body, emotions, and spirit to best understand how to facilitate positive change so that the person can best heal.

1. Intention and awareness

Our intention can have an influence on the patient's motivation for change, understanding and compliance. Being fully present with positive intent for another human is perceived well by those we are with and enhances the healing effects of the encounter. Patient care begins with ourselves because it is difficult to truly heal until we explore our own inner nature.

As the connection with the patient increases, our ability to sit fully with another suffering human being will be enhanced and the appreciation of our work will be enhanced. This growth brings the foundations of the patient's healing that include positive expectations, hope, faith, and positive and unconditional respect.

What is the Optimal Healing Environment-OHE?

The healing environment in which the social, psychological, spiritual, physical, and behavioural components of health care are oriented toward supporting and stimulating the innate healing capacities and realization of patients' wholeness.

In our view, these components include at least six domains plus the physical and organizational structures that support them. The six core areas of an OHE are as follows:

  1. Developing intention and awareness;

  2. The experience of integrity;

  3. Relationship-centred care;

  4. Promoting health with self-care and lifestyle skills;

  5. Collaborative treatment;

  6. Spiritual connection.

For us healing means:

  • The dynamic process of recovery, repair, reintegration and renewal that increases patients' resilience, coherence and integrity;

  • An emergent, transformative process of the whole person - physical, mental, social, spiritual and environmental;

  • A uniquely personal and community process and experience that may or may not involve healing based on patient choices;

  • We are dedicated to the interests of patients and ensure an Optimal Healing Environment (OHE).

 Healing spaces

  The six key elements of OHEe are enhanced by the physical structure in which medical services are delivered. Using nature, colour, light, fresh air, music, fine arts and architecture we have used to create external influences that support the health and well-being of those who enter our space.

  Healing places

Leadership and teamwork are essential to the delivery of an OHE. A culture of healing begins with the modelling of self-care and core values by our leaders and staff and then flows into the mission, vision, planning and behaviour of health care teams.

6.Spiritual connection

Spirituality is a journey toward, or experience of, connection with sources of ultimate meaning defined by each individual. Spirituality includes connection to self, others, nature, and a higher power. If we can help patients work to facilitate awareness of these connections, it improves the sense of being alive, reduces suffering and optimizes self-healing. It is also one of the most effective tools to help change unhealthy behaviour in the patient.

5. Collaborative treatment

The healthcare provider who develops a relationship and understanding of the individual's (patient's) story will then use the most effective tools possible to facilitate health, whether conventional or complementary. This integrative approach starts with less invasive measures before expensive invasive measures are needed, when possible. It often involves working with a team of providers who are able to provide practices that help the body heal. It combines the best technologies, when necessary, but is based on humanism and compassionate care so that the least harmful and most effective approach is implemented to influence health.

4. Health Promotion

Empowering the individual to learn how to best care for themselves so that both the health care provider and the patient are active participants in the healing process is a key ingredient. All healing is "self-healing" and we are at our best when we are able to facilitate individuals to take the best care of themselves. This often includes nutrition, physical activity, lifestyle choices, and managing stress and anxiety. Based on the relationship and continuity of care, our primary care practitioners are in a unique position to influence healthy lifestyle changes before chronic disease develops in patients.
